Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
A head injury or traumatic brain injury (TBI) happens when an external force, such as a fall, accident, or blow, damages the brain. Injuries can range from mild concussions with temporary symptoms to severe trauma causing long-term physical, cognitive, or emotional problems. Head injuries can affect memory, coordination, mood, and daily functioning. Children, adolescents, and older adults are particularly vulnerable. Prompt medical evaluation and treatment are crucial to minimize lasting effects.
50% of TBIs are caused by falls, with motor vehicle accidents being the second leading cause
02
Types & Severity of Head Injuries
Understanding injury classification helps guide appropriate treatment approaches:
- Mild TBI (Concussion): Brief loss of consciousness, confusion, headache, temporary symptoms
- Moderate TBI: Longer unconsciousness, confusion lasting days to weeks, physical/cognitive impairments
- Severe TBI: Extended unconsciousness or coma, significant long-term disabilities
- Penetrating TBI: Object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue
- Closed Head Injury: Brain injury without skull fracture, from acceleration/deceleration forces
- Diffuse Axonal Injury: Widespread damage to brain's white matter from rotational forces
- Contusion: Bruising of brain tissue with localized bleeding
- Coup-Contrecoup Injury: Damage at site of impact and opposite side of brain
Even mild TBIs can have significant long-term consequences if not properly managed.

Common Symptoms After Head Injury
Symptoms can be physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral:
- Physical symptoms: Headaches, dizziness, fatigue, sensitivity to light/noise, balance problems
- Cognitive symptoms: Memory problems, difficulty concentrating, slowed thinking, executive dysfunction
- Emotional symptoms: Depression, anxiety, irritability, emotional lability, personality changes
- Sleep disturbances: Insomnia, excessive sleepiness, disrupted sleep patterns
- Sensory problems: Blurred vision, ringing in ears, bad taste in mouth, smell/taste changes
- Post-concussion syndrome: Persistent symptoms lasting weeks to months after mild TBI
- Communication difficulties: Word-finding problems, slurred speech, comprehension issues
- Behavioral changes: Impulsivity, aggression, disinhibition, apathy

Prevention & Long-term Brain Health
Strategies to protect brain health and prevent future injuries:
- Head injury prevention: Safety equipment, fall prevention, and risk reduction education
- Brain health monitoring: Regular cognitive assessment for early detection of changes
- Lifestyle modifications: Exercise, nutrition, sleep, and stress management for brain health
- Medication management: Avoiding medications that increase fall risk or impair cognition
- Secondary prevention: Reducing risk of subsequent injuries (especially important after first TBI)
- Alcohol and substance use management: Minimizing substances that impair judgment or increase fall risk
- Chronic condition management: Optimal control of conditions affecting brain health
- Regular follow-up: Ongoing monitoring for late-emerging complications
